Oakland Park Purse-Snatcher Caught In Act Bonds Out Of Jail

OAKLAND PARK (CBS4) – A burglary suspect who was caught on camera breaking into an Oakland Park woman's home to steal her purse while she sat just several feet away was out on bond Sunday.

Alvin Lee Batson Jr., was released from jail after posting an $8,000 bond. BSO investigators said Batson changed his hairstyle and shaved his facial hair in an effort to disguise himself.

Detectives from the Broward Sheriff's Office said the arrest came following a tip that was phoned into Broward Crime Stoppers. The tipster identified the suspect as Batson, 31, after seeing the surveillance video.

"I don't like predators," said the victim Evelyn, who asked that her last name not be used. "He's a two legged predator!"

Last Wednesday, BSO released surveillance video of the man who snuck into the house in the 3400 block of NW 20th Avenue on Saturday, January 29th shortly after 7 p.m.

The video shows Batson walking into the 61-year-old's backyard through a rear gate before he entered the house through a sliding glass door and stole her purse from a kitchen chair while she was watching TV nearby in the living room.

Evelyn was fighting mad about the crime that happened while both she and her 88-year-old mother were both in the home.

"I just thought, 'You son of a bitch, you ought to be glad that I did not come out of the back room cuz you would have been dead, I would have shot your ass."

Evelyn gets even angrier when she thinks about what would have happened if her mother was injured. She told CBS4's Ted Scouten that Batson would have ended up in the Everglades.

"I would have slashed him up into pieces," Evelyn said. "I would have slashed his body up into pieces if I had caught him and just dropped him out there for the alligators; that's how pissed I am."

Evelyn also said that Batson was lucky he was caught and didn't try to return to her house.

"Honey, wrong person," Evelyn said. "Wrong, wrong person. I'm not some little old lady from Pasadena. I am one tough (expletive)."

And if Batson think that Evelyn will let his crime go, he might want to think again.

"You can't come to my house and expect me to be forgiving," Evelyn said. "I'm not one of the 'mamby-pamby' whoever they are, right-wing, left-wing liberals, milk toast, whatever. I'm not one of those people who forgive and forget. I never forget and I never forgive!"
