NYPD: Cold Case Killer Could Be In South Florida
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Detectives from New York City are in South Florida in hopes of catching a killer in a 1992 shooting in Brooklyn. Detectives told CBS4 News that they received information from the victim's family that someone saw the suspect, Wade Arthur, in South Florida.
New York City Police say Henderson Griffith was just 22 years old when Arthur gunned him down in 1992. The men were friends, police say but had an argument over a woman that led to murder.
Griffith's niece, Stacia, said the family is hopeful that an arrest is imminent.
"This is the best progress that we've had in 21 years," Griffith told CBS 4's Carey Codd. "It feels good. And when they bring this man in, oh my God, it's gonna be one of the most joyous days of my life."
Police say Arthur could be anywhere in South Florida.
"We have absolutely no clue as to what he's doing here at this point," Detective Robert Schulman said.
And that's where the public comes in. Detectives say Arthur, who is now 41, is likely using an alias and could be wearing his hair in long braids or dreadlocks. They hope someone who knows him, turns him in and provides a final measure of comfort to the family of Henderson Griffith.
"It becomes an obsession to track him down for the family to have closure," Schulman said.
Griffith's niece says her uncle was a loving man who used to walk her to school and helped everyone he could. She says it's not fair for Wade Arthur to be living life while her uncle barely had a chance at it.
"It hurts to know that my uncle is gone and this guy is just walking the streets freely and enjoying his life," she said.
