Nyad Preps For Final Attempt To Swim From Cuba To Keys
KEY WEST (CBSMiami) - Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad is ready to make one final attempt to swim from Cuba to the Florida Keys.
Nyad has tried to make the swim multiple times in the past. She tried twice in 2011 and one more time in 2012, but was done in each time by either the box jellyfish or poor weather conditions.
She plans to leave for Cuba on Saturday and if conditions permit, give it one last go.
Nyad will wear a silicone mask to try to protect her face from the jellyfish, but she said it's "cumbersome" and "hard to breathe" in. However, she said the tentacles of the jellyfish can't penetrate the mask.
Thirty-five people will be along for the ride with Nyad hoping she can finally finish her extreme dream.
