MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A wife shot in the chest in Northwest Miami-Dade died Tuesday night. Her husband, the alleged gunman, was captured by police in another state.

The two children who witnessed this shooting are now living with their mother's sister and her husband after a shelter hearing at the Juvenile Justice Center.

The couple's 11-year-old son who called 911 after the shooting and his 13-year-old sister spoke briefly with Judge Michael Hanzman before he gave the aunt, Angela Corley, and her husband temporary custody.

Corley told the Judge she had no criminal history and was a stay-at-home mom. Corley said she has 10 children. Four of them are still living at her home. She also said her sister's two children and her own kids were very close.

"They grew up together," she said. "I practically raised my niece and nephew. We are a close-knit family."

The judge said Corley and her husband would be able to receive caregiver financial assistance from the state and DCF would also conduct a study of their home.  The children will live with them in Northwest Miami-Dade and will be able to go to the same school. There will be another hearing on November 17th.

Corley and her husband and family members left the Juvenile Justice Center without commenting.

Miami-Dade police said Donald Edward Strange, 59, got into a verbal argument with his wife Hazel Strange, 46, at their home at 5315 NW 30th Place.

Investigators said the dispute turned into a physical confrontation, at which point Donald Strange reportedly shot his wife at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to authorities, Strange's 11-year old and 13-year-old children witnessed him shoot their mother. The 11-year old called 911 after Strange had already fled in his 2010 maroon Honda Accord.

A neighbor, Nathaniel Crews, said, "It's lucky he didn't kill the kid. He could have killed the kid too. He ain't got no respect for kids. I hope they catch him. At least if they catch him, it will be bittersweet."

On Wednesday morning, police announced Cook County Sheriff's deputies arrested Strange at a family member's residence in Georgia. He will be extradited back to Miami-Dade County.

Strange is being charged with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Authorities said Strange's wife died late Tuesday night from her injuries.

Neighbors said she was a crossing guard at Martin Luther King Junior elementary school. They also said her husband is a county public works employee.

DCF said the agency did have "a history" with the couple.
