No Named Storms Near S. Fla. For 21st Anniversary Of Andrew
SOUTH MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) – Hurricane Andrew forever changed the landscape and lives in South Florida 21 years ago, Saturday.
While that storm wreaked havoc across South Florida, meteorologists are only keeping an eye on the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend for possible development of a new system.
As of Saturday morning, those chances are very low.
The Atlantic is remarkably calm as the peak of the hurricane season begins.
It was a much different morning 21 years ago when Hurricane Andrew roared through the darkness of August 24th, 1992.
When dawn broke, the light of day revealed unspeakable destruction.
Hurricane Andrew, a category 5, the most ferocious there is, was one of the most costly natural disasters for the United States.
For block after block, mile after mile there was devastation.
Homes were not just damaged, they were demolished.
Andrew killed 44 people, 19 directly, and the remainder in post-storm related accidents.
Andrew left 165,000 homes destroyed or heavily damaged.
The losses, including the cost of cleanup, approached $30 billion. A quarter of a million tons of debris was removed from the hurricane zone.
