No More Stanton, Marlins Shutdown Slugger For Rest Of Season
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The Miami Marlins have made it official; Giancarlo Stanton won't play the rest of the season.
The team announced on their website Wednesday they have shutdown Stanton following his gruesome hit by pitch.
Stanton took a devastating fastball to the face from Mike Fiers on Sept. 11 and suffered facial fractures, dental damage and lacerations.
Five days after the injury, Stanton posted a before and after photo on his Instagram account. Even though Stanton showed a swift recovery, the Marlins are protecting their prized asset.
"He's made tremendous progress," said Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill on the team's site. "But there was still some swelling, then the multiple fractures. There just wasn't enough time, not enough schedule, to get him back on the field."
The team expects him to be fully recovered by the time spring training rolls around.
At only 24, Stanton was having an MVP-like season with a National League-leading 37 home runs and 105 RBIs before the injury.
