No Clarity In Dolphins General Manager Search
DAVIE (CBSMiami) – As the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks prepare to do battle in Super Bowl XLVII, the dysfunction in Davie with the Miami Dolphins continues to become more illuminated with each passing day.
The Dolphins are entering another week without a general manager in place and without any decision on that position looking like it's coming anytime soon. According to CBSSports.com's Jason LaCanfora, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is going to London for a week and then going to China.
Other teams that have candidates up for the job are reportedly upset that the Dolphins are taking so much time finishing the process of hiring a general manager.
Complicating matters further is how much power the general manager will have inside the franchise. The Dolphins' structure is unique in the NFL as the general manager will apparently not have final say over the coaching staff as head coach Joe Philbin will report directly to Ross as well as the GM.
Typically, the general manager will serve as the intermediary between the head coach and the owner and will also have final say over the personnel, whether it is in the front office, in the coaching staff, or players on the field.
The Dolphins have reportedly interviewed multiple candidates for the general manager job and have also been rejected by several highly respected personnel men throughout the National Football League.
But, the Senior Bowl practices are starting Monday and teams typically do a lot of scouting at the game. With no general manager on staff, whoever takes the job will be dealing with the scouting reports made by scouts who served the previous regime.
Past the Senior Bowl, teams need to identify what players they are going to target in free agency and which of the team's own free agents they plan to keep. Finally, throughout the next three months, scouts will be visiting the various pro days of draft picks around the country leading up to the May 8-10 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately for Dolphins fans, and players, no decision seems imminent on the general manager front and the team that played much of 2013 without a direction, remains without a direction in the front office.
