No Bond For UM Student Accused In Dorm Room Assault
CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) -- A 21-year-old UM student who is accused of assaulting several female students inside their dorm rooms while they slept has been ordered to be held in jail without bond.
Jiahao Yuan appeared in bond court Monday morning after being booked Sunday into Miami-Dade's Pre-Trial Detention Center charged with two counts of occupied burglary with assault or battery.
According to Coral Gables Police, Yuan entered two dorm rooms around 6:00 a.m. Sunday in the Mahoney Residential College dorm and "inappropriately" touched female students while they slept.
Coral Gables police said Yuan got into the rooms because the doors were unlocked.
Once awakened, the first student confronted Yuan, screamed at him and scared him off.
According to the arrest affidavit, Yuan ran from the 7th floor to the 3rd floor where he found another unlocked dorm room and entered it. Once inside, he inappropriately touched another sleeping female student which caused her to wake up and scream.
Investigators found Yuan with help from security cameras, said police. During questioning, Yuan confessed to entering and touching the students, stated the affidavit. Yuan also told police he was drunk and "trying to wake people up so he could hang out," according to the affidavit.
UM officials remind all students to lock their dorm room doors at all times and report any suspicious behavior they see. More importantly, they urged students to never sign in people they don't know into residence halls.
