No Bond For Brazilian Charged In Cruise Ship Rape
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A 20-year Brazilian citizen will remain behind bars at Broward's main jail after a judge rejected his plea to be released on bond as he awaits trial for allegedly assaulting a teenage girl aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
Luiz Scavone is charged with one count of lewd and lascivious acts on a minor, and in his initial appearance Broward Judge John Hurley was placed on immigration hold which is a no bond charge. Judge Hurley was concerned that Scavone would flee the country if released, which might allow him to return to Brazil, which will not extradite citizens to the US.
Scavone and a juvenile allegedly lured a 15-year old girl from a teen club called Fuel on the Allure of the Seas during a recent cruise. They reportedly took her to a room and both sexually assaulted her.
Broward circuit judge Mathew Destry heard from Scavone's attorney and from prosecutors, as the teen's family looked on. None spoke before Judge Destry decided Friday afternoon to continue holding Scavone without bond.
