NFL Hands Jets 100k Fine For Tripping Incident
MIAMI (CBS4) -The National Football League has slapped the New York Jets with a $100,000 fine for violating league rules after coach Sal Alosi intentionally tripped Dolphins player Nolan Carroll during a punt return.
The team was fined because Alosi ordered five inactive players to form a wall along the sideline during a punt return. In the game on December 12, Alosi and the five players were lined up shoulder-to-shoulder with their toes on the white line when he stuck his knee out to trip Carroll on the sideline.
The league called the action a competitive violation, as well as a dangerous tactic.
The NFL also cited Alosi and Mike Westhoff for publicly accusing other teams of performing similar tactics on the field.
Alosi has been suspended indefinitely without pay for the remainder of the season and fined $25,000 by the NFL. His indefinite suspension from the Jets also carries an additional $25,000 fine.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan and special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff have denied any part in the scheme.
