New Years Eve Boredom? Key West Offers The Strange And Unusual
KEY WEST (CBSMiami) - If you can't get to Times Square to see the ball drop on New Years Eve, and the sight of a big orange crawling up a hotel doesn't do it for you, how about a drag queen falling to earth in a giant red shoe? That's just one of the New Years events planned for the Keys and Key West Saturday night.
In Key West, it's tradition for the female impersonator Sushi to welcome in the New Year on Duval street, by riding a giant red shoe to earth. This happens at the Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House complex, 724 Duval St., just before Midnight. www.bourbonstpub.com/newyearseve.html.
If Sushi isn't your thing, try the celebration at Sloppy Joe's, the iconic dive bar on Duval. Thousands of people are expected to watch a gigantic man-made conch shell, the symbol of the Florida Keys, drop in front of 201 Duval. Not enough for you? How about a pirate wench? At the Key West historic seaport, cannons boom as a pirate wench is lowered from the top of tall ship's mast. If what you want is fireworks, you have choices in the Middle and Upper Keys ranging from elegent dinners with a celestial show to seats on the beach. Blackwater Sound in Key Largo is the setting for the Upper Keys' annual New Year's Eve fireworks extravaganza, hosted by bayside restaurants Sundowners, Señor Frijoles, Cactus Jack's, Gus' Grille at the Marriott Key Largo Beach Resort and the Caribbean Club, all located around mile markers (MM) 103-104. In Islamorada, midnight fireworks on the beach are planned at Pierre's Restaurant and Morada Bay Beach Café, MM 81.6 bayside.
