New Tapes Show Zimmerman Called Sanford PD Lazy
SANFORD (CBS4) - Newly released video and audio of George Zimmerman has some wondering what kind of relationship Zimmerman had with Sanford Police before he shot Trayvon Martin.
Back in January of last year, Zimmerman spoke at a Sanford community forum and blasted the police department. But in his criticism, he also revealed that he rode alone with officers.
"I also had the opportunity to take ride-alongs with the City of Sanford Police Department and what I saw was disgusting," Zimmerman said in January 2011.
A few months ago, Sanford Police said Zimmerman did not have any relationship with the department. In the recording obtained by CBS4's news partners at The Miami Herald, Zimmerman suggests the officer was lazy.
"The officer showed me his favorite hiding spots for taking naps ... he took two lunch breaks and attended a going-away party for one of his fellow officers," said Zimmerman.
Sanford Police say they can't find any record showing Zimmerman rode with police.
Zimmerman made the public statement soon after another video went viral. It reportedly shows the son of a police officer punching a homeless black man and at least one other person. Sanford Police did not arrest him that night.
"The law is written in black and white. It should not and cannot be enforced in the gray for those that are in the thin blue line," said Zimmerman.
Meanwhile, new surveillance video from the Sanford Police Department shows Zimmerman walking freely, without an escort, through the station.
Zimmerman faces a second-degree murder charge for the death of Trayvon Martin.
Late Wednesday, prosecutors filed a motion asking the judge to seal the rest of the evidence in the case.
