New Stamps Honor Alan Shepard, Space Mission
WASHINGTON (CBS4) -- America's first man in space, Alan Shepard, is honored on a new Forever postage stamp being issued Wednesday in the Rocket Garden of the Kennedy Space Center.
The stamp is part of a two-stamp set recalling Shepard and the Messenger Mission, the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury.
The stamps are valid for first-class mail. The issuance marks the 50th anniversary of America's first manned space flight. Freedom 7, piloted by Shepard, blasted off on May 5, 1961.He later became one of only a dozen men to walk on the moon, where he hit a golf shot that became perhaps the most memorable moment of the Apollo 14 mission he commanded. Shepard died in 1998.
