New "Shop" To Help Dade's Homeless Students

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and members of the school board will officially open the district's new 'shop' that assists homeless students next week.
The shop is part of Project UP-START (Updating Personnel Support and Tutoring Activities to Retain Transitioning students) which is a collaboration between community groups, parents and schools. The goal is to "open doors to academic opportunities, remove barriers, and promote a healthy sense of self with hope for bright tomorrows."
The first shop opened in November 2013 in the School Board Administration Building Annex so that homeless students and families, who are in Project UP-START, could pick up backpacks, school supplies, toiletries, non-perishable food, clothing, shoes and more.
The new Shop at Lindsey Hopkins Technical College, will be nearly double the size of the first location. It will have the same items as the old store plus an all new "Prom Boutique."
