MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro received a high-profile visitor at his home in Havana on Sunday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.
Li, accompanied by his wife, Cheng Hong, met Castro during their two-day visit to the island nation.
The visit is the final part of Li's three-nation tour, following visits to the United Nations in New York and then Canada. Li said the trip was aimed at strengthening high-level exchanges and intensifying political trust between the countries. China is Cuba's second-largest trading partner only after Venezuela.
In a released statement, the Chinese head of government expressed satisfaction with his first visit to Cuba. He also expressed his admiration for Cuba, for its patriotism and its achievements.
According to the statement, the two leaders agreed on their assessment of the international situation, complexities, dangers and challenges and the need to preserve human existence and peace. The report goes on to say the two leaders were confident the visit would strengthen cooperation and friendship between the parties, governments and peoples.
