New Phone Scam Targets FPL Bills
MIAMI (CBS4) - There's a new scam going around South Florida and this time, it involves your electric bill.
The Miami-Dade Police Department's Economic Crimes Bureau has heard from several homeowners who say they have received calls from people saying their electric bill is past due and service will be cut off unless they purchase pre-paid gift cards. The amount of the gift cards varied from $150-$500. The scammers then told the homeowners they could pay the bills with the pre-paid cards using the account and PIN numbers.
Investigators warn to never give personal information to anyone over the phone, instead offer to call the utility company back to settle the matter.
