New Metrorail Line Travels To Miami International
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — It took 28 years to happen, but good things are worth the wait.
On Saturday, Metrorail began traveling to Miami International Airport. The cost is just $2.
Miami-Dade Transit opened the new Orange Line from Dadeland South Station in Kendall to the new airport station at the Miami Intermodal Center, located just east of the airport.
Residents are excited about the new travel option.
"I'm from New York. We have the train. It's easy...its much better for everybody," said John Hartnett.
Ana Barroso from Panama likes it too.
"The Miami International Airport has changed a lot so it's nice. It's bigger and it's better for us, you know, we have different options to take the bus here to go to the mall," said Barroso.
This will be the first new Metrorail line since the elevated train system opened in 1984.
Irene Ferradaz, public information officer for Miami-Dade Transit, says the Orange Line will transform Miami transportation.
"It's just going to, I believe, revolutionize the way people travel to and from not only Miami International Airport but around the city and the community as a whole," said Ferradaz.
Ferradaz says that the new line will ease riders' worries as well.
"People won't have to worry 'Oh the taxi' and 'Where do I go?' and all this and that. We'll just offer them an information kiosk just letting tourists and others know 'Hey...this is the best way to get there," said Ferradaz.
Adds Ferradaz: "The frequencies at peak times, being rush hour...which is early morning, late afternoon and around lunch time...it will be up to five minutes, so people will only have to wait five minutes for either an orange or green-line train."
