New Leads Into Case Of Loaded Shotgun, Ammo Found At MIA
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Investigators from the Joint Terrorism Task Force have identified several people they want to talk to in connection with a loaded shotgun found inside a bathroom at Miami International Airport.
CBS4 News has learned the people were identified from surveillance video which has been carefully reviewed by investigators.
One of the people who investigators want to talk to is believed to have left the country the day the gun was found on Sept. 22nd.
The weapon was described as a pistol grip shotgun with five rounds loaded inside. In addition, two boxes of ammo were also recovered.
The gun was wrapped in a towel and found inside a garbage can in the men's bathroom located near Concourse "D" before the security checkpoint.
The gun was discovered by airport custodian Rudolphe Guerrier.
"As I went to change the garbage can, I looked inside and saw the object in the can and then I called police," said Guerrier. "It was wrapped in a towel. Then I put the plastic back around the garbage can."
Guerrier was stunned he found a weapon inside the airport.
"I have never seen that before," he said. "Never."
CBS4 News also learned the paperwork trail of who owned the gun has led to a man who is now deceased.
Investigators have called the incident "a credible threat" against airport security even referring to it as a possible active shooter situation that was foiled by accident, when the weapon was discovered in a trash can by the custodian.
