New & Improved Pompano Beach Plaza Re-Opens Monday
POMPANO BEACH – Just in time for this year's Thanksgiving travel, a new and improved Pompano Beach Service Plaza on the Florida Turnpike officially re-opens Monday.
Located just north of the Commercial Boulevard exit, the service plaza was the first of eight plazas slated to be remodeled. Florida based Areas USA, which operates the plazas, is investing $160 million in the redevelopment or roughly $20 million per plaza. The re-do of the Pompano Beach plaza was approximately $16 million.
The spiffy water theme redesign of the service plaza includes a custom water fountain, a 400 gallon saltwater aquarium, larger restroom facilities, priority parking for fuel efficient vehicles, a fenced pet exercise area and a significant increase in the number of truck parking spaces.
The Pompano Beach Service Plaza offers a Pizza Hut, a Wendy's, and a Dunkin Donuts, along with a convenience store as part of the restaurant building offering snacks and sandwiches.
Areas USA said in lieu of tips, all food vendor stations at the plaza will have donation jars, and every month the donations will be collected and given to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The plaza also includes an updated Shell gas station.
The Plaza building is smaller than the old facility, as the state studies showed more commuters used the plaza than long distance travelers. Other plazas in less populated areas will be larger to meet those needs.
Work is continuing at the Snapper Creek, West Palm Beach, Ft. Drum, Canoe Creek and Turkey Lake plazas with completion planned by the end of the year. Work will then start at the Ft. Pierce and Okahumpka plazas.
