New Exhibit Shows Science Of Skateboarding
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Whether you think of skateboarding as a sport, recreational activity, or mode of transportation, the simple fact is that it's all about science, specifically physics.
That's the genesis of an exhibit at the Museum of Discovery and Science to show the science behind the fun.
Gravity, momentum, and velocity are just some of the principles of physics the exhibit is showing off with the help of arguably the best skateboarder in history, Tony Hawk.
"Tony Hawk is all about empowering kids and what happens is that this exhibit empowers them with the power of science and information," said Paul Schmitt.
From balancing on the board to the powers of force that will help you stay on the board through a loop of death, Hawk shows off how he uses velocity to propel his tricks. Hawk shows off how momentum can get you through certain tricks safely and there's even a "Create-A-Skate" exhibit to build your own board.
"Kids think making something means a keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen, and they don't realize they can make things with their own hands," said Schmitt.
The Tony Hawk exhibit at the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale is open until September 2. Click here for more information.
