New Details in Fatal Crash
We are learning new details about the fatal accident on I-95 earlier this month that claimed the lives of two Miami men and injured three others.
According to court documents uncovered by CBS 4, Ravindra Mahanand is under investigation for vehicular homicide.
The documents also reveal that investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol found 8 liquor bottles and 7 beer cans in his car -- a 2000 Toyota Camry. The documents do not reveal whether all of the bottles and cans were open or closed.
Investigators also found a bottle cap from an alcoholic beverage inside Mahanand's pants pocket.
A witness told FHP that he saw Mahanand's vehicle pass him driving "at a very high rate of speed" while crossing five lanes of traffic. The witness estimated the speed at 100-105 miles per hour.
Another witness said he also saw the driver of the car cut across traffic, lose control of his car and collide with a 2000 Ford Explorer while five men were changing a tire on the shoulder of I-95 near Sunrise Boulevard.
Victor Morales-Calderon, 49, and Wuilmer Sanchez, 31, were killed.
The three other man suffered serious injuries as did Mahanand and were taken to a hospital.
Court records show that "there is not (sic) independent witness that can place Mr. Ravindra Mahanand, behind the wheel of the 2000 Toyota Camry, at the time of the traffic fatality." The car is owned by Mahanand's father.
An attorney for Mahanand said he could not comment on the case while it is under investigation.
