New Details Emerge In Hit & Run That Injured UM Student
HIALEAH (CBS4) - New video obtained by CBS4 News shows policing taking a suspicious Mercedes Benz from a Hialeah body shop. That car, police say, was involved in a hit-and-run that put 19-year-old UM student Eliza Gresh in the hospital, and left her in a coma. Police say 24-year-old Luis Moya was behind the wheel.
"I really don't want to be here, I don't want the publicity, but I can't believe that this guy did this," said Tony Castro, manager at Pro Collision Body Shop in Hialeah.
Castro says on Tuesday, Moya brought the car to his shop.
"He didn't want to talk too much about what happened. I asked him a couple of times what he had hit and he was very evasive. He changed the conversation," Castro told CBS4's Gio Benitez.
The following day, he saw a description of the car on the news.
"You know, I said wow, that looks like the Mercedes I have," said Castro. "I thought he had hit a dog. I had no idea he hit a person."
It was more than a week ago when, police say, Luis Moya hit Eliza Gresh as she was crossing the street at U.S. 1 and Red Road. It was 4:30 in the morning. When Moya brought the car to the body shop, Castro says Moya lied about the accident and wanted to file an insurance claim to fix the car.
"And I tell him, well your mom is the one that needs to call the insurance company. You can't do it. So then he called her, she drove over, and filed the claim," said Castro.
That's why Moya's mother, Zoila, was arrested and charged with insurance fraud.
Castro is speaking with CBS4 News because, he says, he feels for the family of Eliza Gresh and wants Moya to turn himself in.
"I have a 20-year-old daughter. If this were to happen to her, I'd want someone to step up too," said Castro.
