NCAA Set To Change Bowl Rules
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The NCAA has released recommendations from its Bowl task force the organization hopes will create a certification process for bowls and set academic standards for bowl participation.
One change will move the bowl licensing to a certification process that will shift the financial viability of bowls to the conferences. This will allow the NCAA to focus more on other areas.
To that regard, the Division I Bowl Task Force also supported new academic standards from the Division I Board of Directors that would ban teams that do not meet the 930 Academic Progress Rate benchmark from postseason play, including bowl games.
That would mean that some teams with a 6-6 record, the minimum for bowl participation, may get left out of the countless bowls per season.
For example, Florida State's APR last season was 932, which would barely qualify them for a bowl game, assuming they win six games in a season.
On the flip side, if FAU won 6 games, the team wouldn't be eligible for bowl play because their APR sits at 920.
Finally, the task force also called for a three-week window for all bowl games to be played.
The specific dates would fluctuate by year, but the task force said the bowls should begin after final exams at most schools and before the first day of classes in January.
