NCAA Reinstates UM's Durand Scott
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (CBSMiami) - The University of Miami announced Thursday that junior guard Durand Scott had been reinstated by the NCAA after having been declared ineligible by the school for receiving impermissible benefits.
Scott was suspended just before last weekend's ACC Tournament game against the Florida State Seminoles. UM ended up losing the game to FSU, who wound up winning the ACC Tournament.
The NCAA's reinstatement provisions stated Scott must pay the value of the received benefits to charity and serve a six-game "withholding penalty."
So, Scott must sit out the next six games for the Hurricanes, but will get credit for sitting out the Seminoles game. If UM doesn't play five more games this season, the suspension will carry over into next year.
The NCAA said the benefits were received prior to the arrival of the current coaching staff at UM, which means the benefits may have been received under current University of Missouri head coach Frank Haith.
The Canes are set to take part in the National Invitational Tournament starting Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. against Valparaiso.
