NCAA Pres. Endorses Football Final Four
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The NCAA has proven to be largely worthless in the Football Bowl Subdivision. But, the NCAA president opened the door Thursday to a four-team college football playoff.
NCAA President Mark Emmert said he would support a four-team playoff as long as the field doesn't grow beyond a final four.
Emmert's backing could bolster a potential move by the Bowl Championship Series towards a "plus-one" format.
Still, Emmert said a 16-team playoff is too much for college players to undergo, at least at the Division I level. Every other division of college football has a playoff format with multiple teams, except the FBS.
The 11 BCS conferences met earlier this week to discuss desperately needed changes to the system starting in 2014. The BCS said no consensus of opinion had been formed yet.
The plus-one format had originally been introduced by the ACC and the SEC. But, it was rejected in no uncertain terms by the Big Ten, Pac-12, Big 12, and Notre Dame.
Ironically, the fact that the SEC has won the last six straight BCS national championships has led to calls from other conference commissioners to at least seriously discuss the plus-one format.
