NBA May Contract Teams
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The NBA and the Miami Heat are coming off of the most successful season in years. But, other teams are not as lucky and NBA commissioner David Stern said after the lockout is ended with a new collective bargaining agreement, league contraction is on the table.
"Contraction is not a subject that we're against," Stern told ESPN.com. "In fact, when you talk about revenue sharing, a number of teams have said that if you have a team that is perpetually going to be a recipient, aren't you better off with the ability to buy them in."
While the Heat are not a team that could ever be contracted; other teams like the Sacramento Kings, New Orleans Hornets, and Charlotte Bobcats could all be in line to see their teams vanish.
"The players actually have been heard to suggest that (contraction) as well," Stern said. "So we've said to the players, you know, 'Give us the right to contract, let's agree upon what the basis will be. Let's make this deal and then let's continue to look at that subject.'"
Stern made the Kings, Hornets, and Bobcats seem safe from contraction, but as with everything in sports, that could simply be paying lip-service to those teams. One thing is for sure, nothing will be happening anytime soon until there's movement on the CBA.
