N4N: T-Shirts Offering Hope For Children With Cancer
SUNRISE (CBS4) - Ron Jon Surf Shop has everything you need for summer fun – surf boards, sandals, and tee shirts. But one tee shirt displayed at the very front of the store benefits a special cause when you buy it.
"It goes to Jessica June which is an amazing organization and foundation that helps a lot of kids, cancer kids." explains CJ George,12.
The small foundation is run by South Florida mom Sandra Muvdi.
"The mission of the foundation is to provide emergency financial assistance to local families in South Florida that have a child with cancer," Muvdi explained to CBS4's Nicole Maristany.
Muvdi shares a special connection to the families she helps.
"Jessica June is my daughter and this foundation is in memory of Jessica June," said Muvdi.
Since the start, more than a thousand children and family members impacted by childhood cancer have been helped.
Children like CJ.
"I was sick, I was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma when I was nine and I had chemotherapy for 2 years, but now I'm cancer free," said CJ.
And 6 year old Zuyani Bernal, who's also happy to be in remission, "I had cancer in the liver." She explained.
Weeks ago some of the children helped by Jessica June came together to paint a mural for Ron Jon's.
"[It was} really cool and exciting, I really like designing and creating stuff so when I really got to do it and it was really painted I got really excited," said CJ.
"It was like fun and I got to paint two flowers," said Zuyani.
The design turned into the tee-shirt they're now selling in stores where all sales proceeds go back to help the foundation.
"It's great to see them having fun, were there through their crisis. In the hospital, by their bedside, in their home. This is a different sort of situation were seeing them having fun doing a painting, creating something that will be lasting and that they feel proud of," said Mudvi.
