N. Miami Vigil To "Light Up Night" For Trayvon Martin
NORTH MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Members of South Florida's Haitian-American community are expected to gather Friday night at a candlelight vigil for Trayvon Martin.
Community leaders organized the vigil to protest neighborhood watch guard George Zimmerman's acquittal in the killing of the17-year-old Miami Gardens teen.
The peaceful gathering will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Griffing Park, located at 12300 W. Dixie Hwy in North Miami starting at 7:00 p.m.
Participants are asked to bring a white candle or flashlight to "light up the night for equal justice."
The vigil will allow those attending to express their sympathy to the Martin family and to ask for a revision of the "Stand Your Ground Law."
Dr. Smith Joseph, the chief organizer said, "It is a call for action for everyone in our community to ask the federal and state governments to change the "Stand Your Ground Law" and stop racial profiling.
It's to be noted that Zimmerman did not use Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law in his successful defense. He used "self-defense."
