Murder Suspect Struck By Car While Fleeing Police
HIALEAH (CBS4) - A South Florida man accused of murdering his wife was rushed to the hospital after he was hit by a car on the Palmetto Expressway while running from police.
The incident began in Hialeah just after noon Wednesday when police began looking for a man accused of killing his wife, Yoanys Martinez-Avila, 31, in their apartment at 6565 West 2 Court.
Police believe Pupo-Gonzalez strangled Martinez-Avila in front of their 4 year old son, and then dropped the child off with a babysitter.
Police say that man, later identified as Jose Antonio Pupo-Gonzalez, 37, went to the Hialeah Chambers Building at 1840 West 49th Street. Authorities shut down a portion of West 49th Street and evacuated everyone inside the building while it was searched.
A short time later, Pupo-Gonzalez was spotted walking along the northbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway. When when officers approached Pupo-Gonzalez, he crossed over into the southbound lanes, trying to elude officers. He was then struck by a minivan heading southbound. Pupo-Gonzalez was taken by Hialeah Fire Rescue to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
The couple's two children, ages 4 and 13, are being tended to by the Department of Children and Families. It is unclear if they will stay with family or DCF.
