MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating a stolen vehicle that had a 1-year-old male child inside.
According to detectives, the child's mother stopped at a home at 26980 S.W. 143rd Place just before 8 p.m. to visit a friend. She left the child inside the running vehicle and went into the home.
Upon exiting the home she realized that the vehicle was gone and found a bicycle left on the scene, according to authorities.
At approximately 8:40 the vehicle was found abandoned at 140th Avenue and S.W. 272nd Street with the child still inside.
The child was not harmed and has been returned to his mother.
"I'm just happy I got my son back, that's it," said the child's mother after being reunited with her son.
Also with the child's mother was her brother, Tommy Surita, who briefly spoke to the media.
"I stepped in the house for a second and my sister needed a phone so we were going to meet eachother so I could give her the phone," he said. "She stepped past the gate [and] we didn't know there was a guy creeping around the car and he just jumped in and took off. She turned around screaming and I tried to run out but I'm on foot. It happened so quick."
The suspect remains at large and the investigation is ongoing.
