Most Hurricane Milton insurance claims open
TALLAHASSEE - Two weeks after Hurricane Milton hit Florida, about 15.8% of insurance claims had been closed, according to data posted Wednesday on the state Office of Insurance Regulation website.
In all, 237,231 claims had been reported, with 17,427 closed with payments made to policyholders and 20,144 closed without payments.
Claims might be closed without payments, for example, if policyholders do not meet deductibles or if residential damage was caused by flooding, according to the Office of Insurance Regulation.
Homeowners' policies typically cover wind damage, but not flood damage.
Of the 237,231 claims, 190,623 involved residential property, while 31,660 involved "private passenger" vehicles.
Other types of claims involved such things as commercial property and commercial vehicles.
Estimated insured losses as of Wednesday were $2.799 billion. Milton made landfall Oct. 9 in Sarasota County as a Category 3 hurricane before crossing the state.
