Hurricane Ophelia Racing Toward Canada
MIAMI (CBS4) – The center of Ophelia is expected to pass over the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
At 5 p.m. Sunday, the center of the Category 2 hurricane was about 485 miles southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland and whipping to the north-northeast at 33 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 100 mph with some higher gusts.
Hurricane force winds extended out 45 miles, tropical storm force winds that extended out 260 miles.
Forecasters expect it to continue heading in a northeasterly motion on Sunday and take a turn toward the northeast Sunday night. Steady weakening is expected, according to the National Hurricane Center which said Ophelia is expected to be near hurricane strength when it passes close to the peninsula and then become a post-tropical cyclone after it passes southern Newfoundland.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been posted for the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland.
Ophelia is the fourth hurricane of the season.
