Moneywatch: Cracking The Case On Cell Phone Holders

MIAMI (CBS4) - Are you looking for a new case to protect your smart phone? There are so many options out there, it is hard to choose.

But a South Florida company says there phone is the best and it just got selected as reaching military grade protection.

The CBS4 Moneywatch team did a test and dropped the cell phone off a ladder, kicked it around, threw it from a moving car and tossed it off a roof.

These measures were taken to test the new line of cases from the Ballistic Case Company out of Sunrise, Florida.

The company has created a military grade case using 5 layers of plastic rubber and Silicon.

"In between all those layers, we have things that cover your microphone, your speakers, and your buttons," said Fernando Tages, C.O.O. of Ballistic Cases Company.

The company tests the cases accessories.

"We have a test procedure where we basically try to test two years of use in two weeks," said Daniel Acero, Director of Engineering.

They test for clear audio.

"We want to make sure that it is not going to cause any decibel loss when we when someone puts a phone in there," said Raymond Manion, an engineer.

The company also tests for quality control out of their South Florida location.

"We have to make sure that each one of these parts interlocks correctly," said Aaron Stewart, Quality Control Manager.

The most important part about testing is making sure the Ballistic HC case is durable.

It survived a 14 drop fall from a ladder and a kick from across a parking lot. The phone even survived a toss out the window of a moving car. The most impressive test of survival was when it was dropped from a 20 foot roof and still kept working.

"There is a huge demand in the market for something that is going to protect the phone if they drop it," said Tages.

And while there are so many cases out there, consumers need to pick the one that is right for them.

The Ballistic HC retails for around $50.
