Naranja Accident Devastates Family
NARANJA (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade police are still investigating an accident involving a car that hit a mother, her son and his cousin as they crossed a Southwest Miami-Dade road, killing one of the boys.
Miami-Dade Police Det. Roy Rutland said 42-year old Donelle Griffin, her son 7-year old Ameer Blair and his cousin 8-year old Jaheim Haddo were trying to cross 137th Ave near 268th Street in Naranja when they were hit by a car Tuesday night.
"It had to be a very hard impact," said Yvonne Wright who saw the crash. "My prayers go out to the family."
The driver, 25-year old Dagoberto Trevino of Homestead, stopped and waited for police to arrive.
"I couldn't stand looking at him, but I was there and told him I was sorry and he was conscious I asked God for forgiveness and I'm just wishing they could forgive me," said Trevino. "I want to attend the little boy's funeral and pay my respects."
Investigators say Griffin and the children were not crossing the street in a crosswalk or at a light.
Curtis Nelson Jr. said he saw the crash and tried to help.
"The first boy jumped up and we ran out of the gate to get him then we saw the lady lying down and I ran to the lady. When we saw the other little baby, I left the lady because the other little baby he wasn't moving," said Nelson.
Esperanza Trevino said her brother was driving the car.
"He's sad; he has a kid of his own he's eight," she said.
Miami-Dade police say no charges have been filed against Trevino.
