Mom Of S. Florida Marine Jailed In Mexico Hopeful Despite Hearing

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The mother, and lawyer, of a Weston Marine jailed in Mexico is hopeful despite a judge's orders Wednesday to remain behind bars.

Sergeant Andrew Tahmooressi has been held in a Mexican jail, facing three fire arm charges since March 31st.

Tahmooressi was driving to meet up with a friend when he made a wrong turn and ended up crossing the border, with all his belongings including legally purchased U.S. guns, in his pick-up.

Tahmooressi had a hearing with a judge for the first time Wednesday.

Following the hearing, his camp remained optimistic although Tahmooressi was not freed.

"I just left Andrew right now so I was able to talk with him for 20 minutes—he's strong, he's confident," said Jill Tahmooressi following Wednesday's hearing.

Tahmooressi's attorney, Fernando Benitez, believes the hearing was an indication that they are on track.

The hearing was a success and we feel we are finally on the right track in order to achieve what every one of us is ultimately hoping for," said Benitez.

Benitez went on to say there were multiple irregularities in the records.

Thamooressi's next court date is scheduled for August 4th.
