MIAMI (CBSMiami) – There was a lot of excitement in South Florida following the announcement by soccer icon David Beckham that he was planning on bringing a Major League Soccer team and new soccer-centric stadium to Miami.
But that was over a year ago.

In the time since, Beckham's group of investors have found two areas of land that they liked as stadium sites, but both were shot down.
Things have been mostly quiet since then, with little news regarding Beckham's plans for his Miami franchise being reported.
Thankfully for all of the excited South Florida soccer fans, that could be about to change.
While in San Jose to celebrate the opening of the MLS' newest venue on Sunday, league commissioner Don Garber was asked about the status of a Miami franchise.
Garber confirmed that things are still on track for Beckham to bring soccer to Miami, saying that new updates could come in "a couple weeks" when he pays a visit to the region.
Knowing that South Florida will be a great place for a professional soccer team, Garber still believes that a Miami franchise is on its way.
"When you have the right stadium plan in the right environment you have success. We don't have that yet. David and his partners are doing a great job trying to get it done," Garber said.
"We'll be [in Miami] in the next couple weeks," added Garber. "[We] hope to get something done."
Speaking of a visit to Miami, it's being reported that Beckham arrived in town on Sunday.
Whether this has anything to do with the MLS is yet to be seen, but soccer-hungry fans in South Florida can certainly hope it does.
CBS4's Lauren Pastrana contacted multiple commissioners and the mayor. Their representatives were unaware of Beckham's visit and said no meetings were scheduled.
A spokesperson for Miami Beckham United issued a statement.
"Miami is one of David's favorite cities and he has numerous business interests and friends here, so he visits as often as possible. David and his partners very much appreciate the strong support we've received from our fans and the league as we work hard to bring an MLS club to Miami-Dade. Our plans are on course and we hope to have positive and significant news for you soon."
