Boater Missing Off The Coast Of Key West
KEY WEST (CBSMiami/AP) - An Alaska man, along with his sailboat, has gone missing in the Keys.
Jay Wesley Rydberg, 40, has been living on a sailboat for the past year in Key West's Garrison Bight Marina, according to reports from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
According to Rydberg's sister, Jill Lesseig, he had sailed from Key West to Fort Myers and was on his way back to Key West last week aboard his 39-foot trimaran sailboat. He told his sister he should be arriving in Key West Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday morning, around 4 am, the Coast Guard detected Rydberg's Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).
A 78-hour search began but there was no sign of the man or his boat where Rydberg's beacon was found 33 miles north of Key West. Also, according to the U.S. Coast Guard there were no reported storms in the area.
Lesseig told authorities that her brother, known to ride around in a bright red bicycle, worked at "manual labor" but wasn't sure who he worked for.
Rydberg is described as a white male, 5-foot-11-inches, approximately 170 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He reportedly wore an eye-patch over his missing right eye, had a beard, and has scars on his abdomen.
Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
