Miramar Rally Demands Justice In Trayvon Martin Shooting
MIRAMAR (CBS4) - On the football field where Trayvon Martin once played for the Wolverines, those who knew him well rallied for justice in his death Saturday. F
or Martin's parents this rally was particularly touching because it was a homecoming of sorts.
"This is home. Trayvon was raised In this park," said Tracy Martin, Trayvon's father. "This is definitely home for him as a park."
It was in that space that many reacted to news reported by the Orlando Sentinel. A forensic consultant used voice identification software to determine it was not George Zimmerman's voice crying out for help in the 911 tape. The consultant used technology to compare a sample of Zimmerman's voice with the audio in the 911 tape and concluded with reasonable scientific certainty that it's not Zimmerman.
"We've been saying that from day one," said Tracy Martin. "We know our kid's voice. We knew that it's the Sanford Police Department that's in denial. Justice needs to be served."
Martin, 17, of Miami Gardens, was gunned down February 26th while walking through a gated Sanford community by self-appointed Neighborhood Watch captain George Zimmerman who claimed he shot the teen in self-defense. Citing the "Stand Your Ground" law, police did not charge Zimmerman in the shooting which sparked outrage and cries for justice across the nation.
Al Lares coached Trayvon for two years on the football team. The news about the audio recording was no shock to him either.
"I knew it from the beginning," said Lares. "Knowing the kind of person he was and how humble and non-aggressive the kid is, I never believed from the beginning when I heard that supposedly he came after behind Mr. Zimmerman."
Tracy Martin believes the news makes a big difference in the case and places them much closer to Zimmerman's arrest.
On Sunday, a massive rally for justice will be held at Bayfront Park in Miami. Gates will open at 1 p.m. and the rally will get underway at 4 p.m.
