Miami Trial Of Man Accused Of Abusing Boys In Haiti Postponed
MIAMI (CBS4) – A Miami federal judge has postponed the trial of a Michigan man accused of abusing boys at a residential center he ran in Haiti.
Matthew Andrew Carter, 66, was originally scheduled to stand trial Tuesday on child sex tourism charges.
Carter's attorney asked the judge for more time to prepare his defense and the judge re-set the start of the trial for April 9, 2012.
U.S. authorities said Carter forced boys at the Morning Star Center in Haiti's capital to engage in sexual conduct in exchange for gifts, money or continued care. The center provided food, shelter and education for poor boys in Port-au-Prince.
Carter has been in custody since his arrest May 8 in Miami.
