Miami Ties Record, Cool Change On The Way
MIAMI (CBS4) - It was a scorching day in South Florida with low 90s in most areas.
At Miami Airport a record high that was first set way back in 1897 was tied. The temperatures were even warmer in Broward County with 91 at Ft Lauderdale Airport. This did not break the record of 94 set in 1948.
Sunday's hot weather was partially due to a strong Southwest wind, often called a blow torch wind because it comes from the warmer Everglades not from the cooler ocean.
Throughout the day there were gusts of wind in excess of 40 mph in many spots which helped nudge temperatures past 90. But unlike the win streak of our Miami Heat, the weather heat wave will be brief.
CBS4 meteorologist Jeff Berardelli said a strong cold front is now heading South near Lake Okeechobee. This may bring a few showers or storms overnight through the dawn hours. Monday cooler and drier air will filter in. Highs will be cooler by about ten degrees with a nice breeze.
The cool change will continue through midweek. Lows will be in the 40s across some of the area by Wednesday morning and with highs only near 70.
