Miami Shores PD: Officer Shot, Killed 47-Year-Old Woman Who Brandished BB Gun
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – An investigation is underway in Miami Shores Monday after a 47-year-old woman was killed in a police-involved shooting.
"I am not aware of an exchange of fire other than the single officer engaging the victim," said Miami Shores Police Chief Kevin Lystad.
Lystad said it all started when his officers responded to a disturbance call at 68 NW 95 Street.
It was there that 47-year-old Etianna Planellas was found outside.
Lystad said there were words exchanged between Planellas and the officer.
"The weapon was then pointed towards the officer," Lystad explained. "The officer felt for his safety and fired at the victim."
According to police, the weapon Planellas pointed at the officer turned out to be a BB gun.
Police have not confirmed how many shots were fired, but a neighbor said he heard multiple rounds.
"A rapid fire. It was blah, blah, blah," recalled Eddie Lewis. "And then minutes later police came."
Chopper4 was over the scene as multiple units had swarmed the Miami Shores neighborhood.
Miami-Dade police and fire rescue also arrived to assist Miami Shores PD.
Longtime family friends say this was police brutality.
"This is unforgivable. Abusement from the police," said Jorge Rodriguez.
And longtime friend Jovani Moran added, "She suffered from a mental illness. They got trigger happy."
