Miami Restaurant Provides Housing For Homeless
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Some trendy restaurants can be viewed as snobby, but one Miami eatery is showing it cares about the community.
Tuyo restaurant, located on the campus of Miami Dade College, is partnering with a local housing project to purchase organic produce.
Tuyo is buying boxes of produce, including everything from arugula to zucchini, from Verde Gardens' 22-acre organic farm. The community offers affordable housing for formerly homeless families and those with disabilities. The partnership will create new jobs for the community's 550 residents.
The eco-friendly restaurant focuses on a farm-to table concept. Tuyo also has its own organic garden at the Miami Culinary Institute.
Chef Norman Van Aken is known for sourcing local ingredients and supporting local communities.
The restaurant also hopes to facilitate teaching opportunities between students and residents going forward.
