Miami police said Officer Alain Guerra was on his way home, traveling southbound on US1.

That's when police say the driver of an SUV, traveling in the opposite direction, lost control, jumped the median and hit the police cruiser.

"You don't expect that, especially a car coming from another northbound lane jumping over to your lane," said Coral Gables police Officer Thomas Salcedo.

The passenger side of the SUV, a Kia Sorrento, was sheered off. The cruiser also had significant front end damage near the driver's side.

Guerra, who suffered a broken wrist, was taken to Doctor's Hospital where he underwent surgery.  Authorities say he's in stable condition.

The woman in the SUV got out and ran but was eventually caught and arrested by police.

She has been identified as 29-year-old Amalia Gonzalez of Miami Beach.

Gonzalez is facing charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and careless driving.

Guerra has been the Miami police for a little over eleven years.
