Miami Police Charge Teen Shot By Officer Outside Dollar Store

MIAMI (CBS4) – A Miami mother is very angry that police won't let her see her son who was shot by a Miami police officer Wednesday outside a dollar store.

"That one that's there is not a dog, it's my son, I want to know information because I'm his mom," said Dyami Orta.

According to police just after 6 p.m. someone flagged down officer Marc Redondo, 27, and told him there was some sort of dispute going on inside the store located in the 14-hundred block of West Flagler Street.

When Redondo reached the store he was confronted by 19-year old Ricardo Orta. Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes said at one point during the confrontation Redondo felt threatened, drew his gun and shot Orta.

"The police got him, the police told him don't move or I'll shoot you," said Orta's brother Miguel. "The police were like talking on a walkie-talkie, he ran from police and the police started shooting, shot him like 3 times."

People in the area said they were stunned by the sound of gunfire.

"I definitely heard three shots," said Angel Barselo. "I told my wife those were pistol shots and that's when I hit the ground."

"Three times is what I heard, three shots is what I heard," said Reynalso Martinez.

"He was telling me 'I'm dying'," said Miguel Orta. "I told him to hold on, don't die on me."

Orta was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. By Thursday morning he was listed as stable. He's been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with deadly weapon.

This is the eighth Miami police involved shooting in the last year.
