Miami Police Hit The Road To Help Special Girl
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A dozen Miami police officers have taken their motto 'to protect and serve' to another level.
Just after dawn they left the Magic City on bikes – destination Orlando. The three-day journey is not for fun; rather it's about raising awareness, and hopefully money, for the family of Angelynn Gutierrez, a 9-year old girl who suffers from cerebral palsy.
Gutierrez, who is a straight "A" student, cannot walk, sit or stand without support. And due to her family's finances, she does not have suitable transportation to take her to therapy sessions.
When Officer Leo Abad learned of the girl's need, he knew he just had to help. He not only helped organize the ride but also set up a web page to collect donations.
Miami police spokesman Freddie Cruz said they're hoping to raise enough money to help her family buy a van outfitted with a disability lift. Their goal is $35,000 and so far they've raised just over $6,000.
