Miami Photojournalist Missing In Libya

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) -South Florida photojournalist Joe Raedle, whose images graced the pages of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel before joining the worldwide photo service Getty Images, has gone missing with two other photographers covering the turmoil in Libya, according to Getty.

The news photo agency said they lost contact with Raedle and the two other journalists Saturday, as they worked in the eastern Tobruk region.

Raedle, 45, has years of experience covering wars and other hot spots around the world. He is a graduate of the University of Miami and is married to Nancy St. Martin, the interactive editor for CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

"I'm confident that he's fine," she said. "He has been covering these kinds of conflicts for a long time. I'm concerned obviously, but I know I just need to be patient. And it will be fine.

St. Martin told CBS4's Natalia Zea that not knowing is a bit difficult.

"It would be nice to know sooner rather than later. But I'm confident that he's fine. Joe's been in Iraq, Afghanistan as have I, it's an important story and it needs to be told and this is his job. This is what he's supposed to do. I know it comes with risks but I'm confident he's fine."

One of the photographers with Raedle also has ties to South Florida. Roberto Schmidt, 45, also graduated from the University of Miami.

Getty Images representative Pancho Bernasconi said the U.S. State Department has been notified.
