MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Two weeks into the new school year, students at Northwestern Senior High School are mourning the loss of one of their own.
"He was a good kid, you know. I guess he was in the wrong place at the wrong time," said David Young who knew the victim. "You'd see him at school. He always had a smile on his face, respectful and everything."
Miami Police said 17-year old Maurice Harris was standing outside when he was gunned down around 6:30 p.m. on Monday near 54th Street and NW 13th Avenue.
Rescue crews rushed the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he died.
It was just two weeks before his 18th birthday. The motive is still under investigation.
"There's no explanation for it. I pray everything gets better for his family, friends, everybody who was close to him," said Young.
Amid the investigation, Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho mourned the loss of another youth.
"The sanctity of young life has been violated once again and our hearts bleed. We shed tears of pain and anguish not only for this child but for the many of our kids who have lost their lives," said Carvalho.
Anyone with information in the case is urged to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305) 471- TIPS.
