Miami Man Sentenced In Tax Fraud Scam
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) - A Miami man will have to serve three years of probation and pay $112,000 in restitution to the federal government for a tax scam involving refunds sent to prepaid money cards.
That was the sentenced handed down in federal court on Wednesday to 26-year old Woody Ulysse.
Court documents show that Ulysse's scheme involved nearly 500 480 fraudulent tax returns which used compromised police and firefighter identities. Instead of having refunds deposited in a bank or mailed, prosecutors say Ulysse had them electronically deposited to Visa, Wal-Mart and other retail money cards.
The cards were then used to make purchases or cash withdrawals. Prosecutors say when he was arrested Ulysse had 11 Wal-Mart money cards loaded with more than $32,000 from fraudulent tax returns.
