Miami Lakes 'Poor Sport' Charged With Felony Assault
MIAMI (CBS4) - A Miami Lakes teen has been charged with felony assault after he allegedly kicked an opponent after he lost a match at a martial arts tournament in California.
According to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald, the 16-year old was competing at a Junior Olympics Trial in San Jose, California last weekend when he lost to a 16-year old from New York.
After the match, the Miami Lakes teen reportedly went up to his opponent, who was watching the competition, and gave him a roundhouse kick to the face. The blow, which knocked out several teeth, sent the boy to the hospital.
When questioned as to why he did it, the Miami Lakes teen reportedly told police he thought he had unfairly lost because his opponent had committed several fouls during the matched which were not called by the referee.
The names of the teens involved have not been released due to their ages.
The teen was charged and released into the custody of his parents.
National taekwondo organizers have said they are considering serious sanctions, including banning the teen from the sport for life.
