Miami Herald Cuts More Jobs, Blames Economy
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - It's a tough time for newspapers, battered by a poor advertising market, digital content using tablets like the iPad, and news access via internet. That was made even clearer Monday, when the Miami Herald Media Company announced yet another round of job cuts at its Miami newspapers.
The announcement came in a memo to staff from publisher David Landsberg which was provided to CBSMiami.com.
"...the first few months of 2011 have been more challenging, from a revenue standpoint, than anyone expected," Landsberg said in the memo, saying the company had experienced a year-to-year decline in revenues.
He said despite cost cutting moves aimed at protecting jobs, the company will cut 15 jobs company-wide. In addition, 35 open positions will not be filled, resulting in a net loss of 50 positions.
The company has already cut hundreds of jobs, instituted news-sharing with other South Florida newspapers, reduced the physical size of it's newspapers, consolidated sections, and raised prices for subscribers and newsstand buyers in an effort to find an economic balance.
Landsberg said in his memo that those employees released will be offered a severance package.
"While this period of turmoil is not behind us yet," he told employees,"we believe we are moving in the right direction. We thank all of you, once again, for your persistence, and for your passion for the important work we do."
A call to a Miami Herald spokesperson was not returned Monday.
The Miami Herald and CBS share a news and business partnership.
